I would like to think that we’ve progressed since Nike’s 1995 ad asking to let girls play sports, but apparently, not as much as I’d hoped. And while I believe we need to advocate for ALL children to be able to play sports, it’s imperative that we change the alarming statistic cited in this clip — by age 14, girls leave sports at twice the rate of boys their age?
Unacceptable.
So let’s do our part and keep girls in the game by continuing to support organizations and messages that demonstrate that athletic and strong means healthy and interesting. A perfect pouty lip, thin thighs, and flawless skin – well, they’re created with computer graphic software. (And if you want a good laugh about that industry standard, check out this clip about the perfect body image created by fotoshop.)
