I was living in Oregon during the 2008 Olympics, which is when I first heard of Mariel. I had always wanted to try fencing but it wasn’t until watching her inspiring victory that I took up the blade. I have been foil fencing ever since, and I now fence with my 10 year old daughter who fences competitively. We are traveling to New York this weekend to see Mariel fence – go team USA!

I am from France, we have great fencers here but Mariel is very professional when she fences, everything seems easy. She is a true champion, and an exemple to follow. I practice sabre too so it is very enlightening to watch her, she gives ideas.

Mariel inspires me to be the best sabre fencer I can be; not only because of her amazing talent and dedication to the sport, but because of her tireless professional and positive attitude, even in the face of adversity. Watching her fence was one of the reasons I switched from fencing epee to sabre, and I haven’t looked back since. She is an excellent role model. Thank you, Mariel!
